About this Agency
The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) is part of the United States Department of Justice and serves as an internal intelligence agency as well as a federal crime investigation unit.
The mission of the Federal Bureau of Investigation is as follows:
To protect and defend the United States against terrorist and foreign intelligence threats, to uphold and enforce the criminal laws of the United States, and to provide leadership and criminal justice services to federal, state, municipal, and international agencies and partners.
Becoming a Federal Bureau of Investigation agent is unlike any other law enforcement career. All agents are responsible for everything from enforcing more than 300 federal statutes to conducting investigations. Agents work on matters detailing white collar crime, foreign intelligence, terrorism, cyber crime, bribery, bank robbery, air piracy, kidnapping, financial crime, drug trafficking, and many other violations.
The Federal Bureau of Investigation was created on July 26, 1908.

To become a Federal Bureau of Investigation Agent you must be a United States citizen between the age of 23 and 37 at the time of appointment. Additionally, you must possess a four year college degree – a requirement that is not used by many other agencies.
Applicants for the position of special agent must qualify under one of five programs including: accounting, computer science, language, law, or diversified.
After qualifying for one of the programs above, applicants are ranked based on their critical skills.
Physical requirements and a FBI background investigation are also part of the hiring process.
